Emma Jane (Guest Post)

Hi, thank you for stopping by. My name’s Emma Jane and I’m the author of Shuttered.

When Daniel has a reading from clairvoyant Rowan at a craft fair, he quickly realises it’s a con. But he likes Rowan, seeing the charm behind the chancer’s facade, and so rather than expose him, he starts to date him — only to discover that some of Rowan’s other cons are far more serious.

The so-called psychic owes ten thousand pounds to two men after deceitfully claiming to be able to find the body of their murdered mother. Daniel must help Rowan open up to recover the genuine gift he possessed in childhood and contact the spirits before the men catch up with them — and Daniel’s telepathic connection with his dog Sasha might be the key to doing so.

I love writing quirky stories and Shuttered brings together all my favourite things in one quirky package – dogs, photography, ghosts, nature, and of course, romance. I really enjoy writing stories set in our own world but with a little twist that makes it different. Many years ago I wrote a short story called ‘My Life and the Pigeon’ which was published in an anthology called Literary Foray. It was about a man who was regularly visited by a pigeon which would speak to him. I love the idea of talking animals, but didn’t want to go down the Dr. Doolittle route, so in Shuttered there’s a talking dog and it’s only the MC, Daniel, who can hear her, but there are no other talking animals. Daniel doesn’t know how or why he can understand his dog, he just accepts that part of his life.
beaudyI think most dog owners will say they can understand their dog – I know I’m fairly confident I can tell you what my own boy, Beau, is thinking! So it was easy to push it that little further with Daniel and Sasha and have him hear her voice.
I wanted to showcase the dog’s loyalty and have it echoed in her master. Daniel will do anything for anybody and once he’s in love, he’s completely loyal. Readers will see in Shuttered that although the love interest, Rowan, doesn’t always deserve this loyalty, it ultimately makes him a better person.
Speaking of Rowan, he has his own quirks. It’s not animals he can hear, but spirits. I’m a sceptic, but I’m fascinated by the paranormal and usually manage to squeeze something along those lines in to my stories. My cousin is a medium, and when I was in my early twenties, I used to sit in a psychic circle to try to learn how to interpret signs and signals from the great beyond. I was never very good at it and I’m not sure whether that’s because it’s not real, because I didn’t try hard enough, or because I don’t have the ‘gift’. I would love to experience something that would turn me into a real believer.
Nature and the countryside are also very close to my heart. Daniel became a wildlife and landscape photographer because I wanted my love for those things to come through on the page. Lyme Regis and Dartmoor both feature heavily and they are two of my absolute favourite places. I’m lucky to live close to both!
Thank you for joining me. I hope you enjoy reading Shuttered as much as I did writing it.
